January-March 2018

The 2018 Church Council kicked off the year by attending and participating in the church’s Council, Staff & Key Leader Retreat on January 19 and 20, 2018 at Camp Overlook. The primary focus of the retreat was to lay the foundation for implementation of the Next Level Innovations (NLI) recommendations that the church membership adopted late last year. A council member is actively participating on each of the NLI teams and will be reporting on the progress of the team at monthly Church Council meetings.

Council members are enjoying reading the book Essentialism by Greg McKeown. This was a NLI recommendation to assist the Council with alignment and clarity around the Vision of the church. The key theme of the book is removing the nonessential from our life, work, and ministry to allow us to channel our time, energy and effort into making the greatest contribution towards the goals and activities that matter and have the most impact. A Council member leads a discussion of assigned chapters of the book at each monthly council meeting.

The Council is committed to keeping the congregation informed of major decisions made at each council meeting and will be communicating key action items after each Council meeting. Summarized below are action items from the first quarter of 2018. A monthly summary will be forthcoming in the future.

  • Approved the purchase of a new video camera to enhance the quality of video streaming of our worship services on social media and the internet. We now live-stream both services.

  • Approved the membership of the Old Bridge church Audit Team consisting of Gayle Whitlock-Chair, Mike McDaniel, Mike Peranio, Donna Fudge, and Denise Tabron. The audit team has subsequently initiated an official audit of the church’s 2017 financial records.

  • Approved the purchase ($21,010) of a new Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) system to replace our current system (which had significant operational challenges) to insure the comfort of the congregation.

  • Approved recommended salaries for the OBUMC preschool staff.

  • Welcomed new member, Kelly Hanks, to the Council.

  • Approved the new Old Bridge Church Vision and Mission statements recommended by the NLI Vision and Alignment Team.

  • Implemented the change to two services with a Connect & Grow hour between the services.

  • Held a town Hall to provide NLI updates (a recording is available on Facebook).

Questions regarding any of the above action items can be directed to the church office and will be followed up by a member of church council.

I, together with the members of the 2018 Church Council, look forward to serving each of you this year and working with our many ministries and small groups who are Serving Christ, Loving Neighbors, Inviting People and Building Community.

Chair, Church Council
